who do you rate (globally) and who don't you rate?

i've always thought Jay-Z was heavily overrated and have never liked his voice at all.

THought Tupac (shock horror, gasp! ) was also heavily overrated, Biggie killed him everytime.

My mate at work loves Canibus but personally i think he's whack too!

Completly agree about Tupac.

I think Jay-z has noticeably changed his flow, he was much better in the early days than he is now.

And i think snoop defintly falls into the overrated category in a big way, back when he first came out his voice was enough of a novelty to impress people with that alone, but now everything he's on is pretty wack and its all a bit 'same old, same old' .

The vast majority of MCs after their second album sound shit. I call it 2nd album syndrome, where the artist gets lazy after the initial success.

With the exception of MF Doom of course.

have you heard Snoop's new single with Pharell? it's fucking terrible, and is almost identical to that other piece of shit tune 'light yo ass on fire'.

You heard Jay-Z's line about "dumbing down to make the dough" or whatever it is. I reckon he could still rip a lot of so called "real" MCs out there if he wanted/needed to.

2Pac was utter tripe, I have to agree with you. The only stuff of his I really liked was Thug Life Vol. 1, and "California Love" but you have to like that. It's illegal not to.

Canibus is certainly a good MC but he's never been on a beat that's shown his skills. He also seems incapable of writing a proper track. He can battle for days though.

I'm actually finding it hard to think of many over rated MCs now. There's plenty out there that aren't the most thought provoking lyricists but then most of them probably wouldn't claim to be (Kanye, Ludacris etc). I'm sure I'll come up with some at some point though. I'll come back to this.

tupac's poetry collection 'the rose that grew from concrete' is actually really good, but only as poetry. his hiphop rhymes were weak, the production was ok, but his voice was fucking irritating as fuck, just like Jay-z's lazy drawl. im not feeling that style at all!

think you're right about canibus - the beats are always wack on his stuff and ive heard a few cheeky freestyles he's done and they have been pretty smart i have to admit!

Nah Tupac was lame ever since he joined the Death Row camp. It was all about Thug Life and Me against the world.

Jay Z sucks the fat one. Reasonable doubt was good though.

Black eyed peas.

Chuck D (after 92's greatest misses) got really complacent with his form and style. His lyrics no longer spark anger and passion, which he used to do effortlessly.

Although overall I reckon there's too many underated MC's in hip hop rather than over.

while we're on the subject of over-rated acts, goldie looking chain have gotta be mentioned. i know they aint been out long but there ridculously over-rated already! Surely their meant to be a joke, if they are i dont really get it, or rather i kind of do but it just aint that amusing. And if they were meant to be serious then that really is a joke!!!!

personally, i see Goldie Lookin Chain as the hiphop equivalent of The Darkness i suppose. they are just having a laugh taking the piss out of themselves and the hiphop genre as a whole. I do think the hiphop community tends to take itself too seriously at times, so light relief is perhaps a little welcome. it's clear theyre just having a laugh and wouldnt consider themselves a proper bona fide hiphop act. but anyway, who's to say that hiphop shouldn't be funny or self-mocking?

GLC are jokes, they were one of the better acts I saw at Glastonbury. Captain Morgan may have clouded my judgement however.
